What is an Elevator Pitch?

An elevaotr pitch is something that every business should have. It is one of the first things that I ask for when I am interviewing a new client to help me learn more about their business. An elevator pitch is a carefully written, well-practiced, concise statement that explains the most important information about what a business is and does in about 30 – 60 seconds.

The idea behind an elevator pitch goes like this: You and another person are on an elevator. That person asks you what you do. You have until you reach your designated floor to explain to him what your business is.

For a small business owner, a simple chance conversation can be one of the most effective methods available to drum up new business for your company. No matter where you are when the opportunity arises, you need to be prepared to deliver an explanation that captures your audience’s attention quickly.

For those of you who are creating an elevator pitch, or looking to improve upon your existing one let me recommend a few key elements that every pitch should have:

• Your unique selling proposition. What is that unique attribute that sets your business apart from your competition?

• Who your target audience is.

• How you add value. What is the problem that your business solves or the need in the market place that your business meets?

• A hook. A call to action. Something that makes the person you’re talking to want to hear more.

• Show your passion. If you aren’t excited about what you do chances are slim to none that your audience won’t get excited either. Let the passion that led you to get involved with your business show through.

Continually perfect your elevator pitch and keep it fresh. As your business grows and changes, your elevator pitch should as well.
